This time of year-the put your Christmas tree at the curb time of year-always brings me back to one of my most favorite memories with my mom and sisters.
It was my Senior year of high school, and a girl’s choice dance was coming up.
Rewind. For YEARS, my mom had told us that she was way more fun before she had kids. And then she would tell us the glory day stories of the things she and her best friend used to do. One of these things: tree-ing people.
How do you tree someone? Well, it’s only done at this special time of year-and you’ve got to be on the lookout. It’s a short window of time when you find trees at the curb. But that’s when you snatch ’em. And put everything you can gather on some poor soul’s doorstep.
But it would seem…irresponsible? Strange? Just plain weird for my mom to take us randomly tree-ing. So we did it by asking someone to a dance with it. Which is completely socially acceptable in Utah.
Collecting and delivering trees that night with my mom and my sisters is one of those memories that makes your sides hurt just thinking about it. Laughing. So hard. Crying. Almost having accidents kind of laughing. I lost my shoe in a snowbank that night. But the memories-so worth it.
So, not only do you get to ask (or answer) someone to a dance in a totally epic way- you’re almost guaranteed a family story that will be told for decades.
So, tree-ing is the first way. Just gather as many trees as you can (or want) and deliver them in the evening. Don’t worry about tree stands, just prop them up on the porch.
“It would be TREEmendous if you’d go to the dance with me.” OR “It would be TREEmendous to go to the dance with you.”
The second way to answer is the flying pig method. Sounds so scientific.
All you’ll need is some helium balloons, a box, pink wrapping paper (optional), and a Sharpie. Draw pig faces on the balloons, wrap up the box in pink wrapping paper, and then you have a choice to make. You can either put the balloons in the box and when the box is opened, the balloons will rise and possibly hang out around some lucky person’s ceiling for a few days. Or, you can tape the strings in the bottom of the box so that they can’t totally escape the box.
The third way is with a big bag of popcorn. Pretty self-explanatory, but still really cute.
Let the dancing begin!

You guys always had the best dance ideas! It seemed like Kellie had to come up with a new ask or answer every month. I always called her first when I needed one! : )
