Easter FHE: Following Christ

March 21, 2016 by Kellie

EASTER FHE LONG

Easter is less than a week away! Here is a great lesson and activity to help your family think about the blessings of following Jesus Christ.

Opening song: “Come Follow Me” (LDS Hymn book, no. 116)

Play the game “Follow the Leader” (also known as the copycat game):  Everyone stands in a circle facing inward.  One person is asked to leave the room. This person will be the guesser.  While he or she is gone, the group decides who should be the “leader.” The leader will be the one who sets the movements for that round. When this person is chosen, invite the guesser to come back and stand in the center of the circle. The leader starts to do a movement and everyone else mimics the leader’s actions without being too obvious to reveal who the leader is.  The leader can do just about anything – jumping up and down, making a kicking motion, patting his or her own head, etc. The guesser looks around to figure out which person is the leader. The guesser is allowed to make up to 3 guesses. You can play a few rounds where others get a chance to be the guesser or the leader, then continue with the lesson.

Display a picture of the Calling of the Fishermen (Gospel Art Picture Kit 209; 62496). Tell the story found in Matthew 4:18–22 and Luke 5:1–11. Explain that when Jesus Christ was on the earth he called men to be his disciples, or helpers. As you tell the story, read aloud Matthew4:19 at an appropriate time. Explain that “I will make you fishers of men” meant that Jesus wanted these men to help him teach the people. Discuss the following questions:

Why did these fishermen follow Jesus?
What would you do if Jesus asked you to follow him and be his disciple?
What does it mean to follow Jesus?
What are some situations at school or at home in which you could follow Jesus?
Why is life easier for us when we follow Jesus?
Give each person two pieces of paper and a pencil. Let the children make sets of footprints by tracing their own shoes or feet. Have them write something they will do to follow the Savior on each footprint. Hang the footprints around your home.

Share with your family how following Jesus Christ has made you happy.

Treat – Swedish fish or goldfish
